What’s right for me? What’s the right size? Comfort and space are what you need. A good rule of thumb is the 12” rule. Allow yourself twelve inches of clearance between the top of the surfaces. For example if you have a bar height of 42 inches, then use a 30 inch high barstool. If you have a kitchen counter at 36 inches high, use a counter stool with a seat height of 24 inches off the ground. You can vary these dimensions an inch either way but just remember that 12 inches is the standard to go by. Space may be at a premium in the area in which you are setting these stools. Keep in mind whether they need to tuck under a counter completely. If so, then look at stools without a back. If comfort is the ultimate goal and space is not an issue then look for a stool with a high back and arms.
